Managing cybersecurity risk and successfully negotiating the budget

Julian Gaunt, Cyber Security Expert, Marlink

11:30 Risk assessment in maritime as a driver for good cyber security governance and compliance.
What are the first steps and what benefits does this provide to a maritime organisation?

IMO resolution MSC.428(98) affirms that an approved safety management system should take into account “cyber risk management”, which might seem a bit vague, however has a large scope. A well performed cyber security Risk Assessment would most definitely consider all applicable threats and vulnerabilities, highlighting the risks that would be the most impacting to operations, safety, and the company as a whole. Improving the corporate visibility of risks allows the allocation of funding appropriately to optimise the cyber security posture effectively.

It’s essential for Maritime organisations to have a clear and accurate picture of their risk exposure, without this, some organisations are maybe navigating blindfold their way through the abyss of cyber threats.

As a first step, is to ensure an effective leadership of cybersecurity governance that can advise and guide appropriately through the new challenges of Governance, compliance and Risk.

Decarbonizing with digital twins

14:00 How digital twins can help optimize and decarbonize.
Matthew R. Miller, Marine Industry Principal, AVEVA

Bio: AVEVA’s Maine Industry Principal has a broad background in developing industrial electronics, automated control and information system software for OEM’s and enterprises.  Matt recently lead the global strategy for Rail, Marine, Trucking and Intermodals supporting clients in all transportation sectors and now focuses on building the digital bridge between ship designers, builders and operators in marine.  Before working at AVEVA, Matt spent 35 years in numerous sales, marketing and management roles at OSIsoft, Viewtronics and Xycom.  A degreed electronics engineer with specialty in computer-based controls and decades of market and product development experience, Matt has been working with leading technology firms to bring real-time performance intelligence to the value chain.

In alignment with the latest IMO regulations, the industry is challenged to dramatically reduce their carbon emissions by 70%. To achieve this, radical changes are needed across the entire development and delivery value chain spanning the life of the vessel. Digital tools that reduce the complexity in design, construction, and operations and leverage the ever more complex data models are needed to innovate and meet these ambitious goals. In our talk, we will share how organisations can use digital twins and operations models to transform and optimise fleets and reveal how the collaboration of data impacts a triple bottom line.

Andreas Symeonidis, Marketing & Partner Relations Manager, METIS Cybertechnology

14:20 Converting RAW Data to actionable intelligence
The presentation will focus on the contribution that real time data and digital tools have on the efforts to reduce emissions and optimize operational performance through actual use cases. The challenges of complying with the regulations while at the same time making the right decisions to be competitive.

For the last five years he is focused on the shipping Industry as a Marketing & Business Development Manager. He is interested in Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, SaaS, Cloud Services and Mobility in the business and the consumer environment.

14:40 Combining data, AI and physics to reduce carbon emissions by 10% or more
Achieving the 2050 emissions reduction goals will require a combination of technology pillars and best practices to get on the right trajectory:

  • Improving ship & fleet operations with smart ship technologies will bring one-quarter of the required gains

  • Leveraging wind propulsion with sails, wings, rotors, etc., either as a refit or as part of an entirely new ship design, will provide another quarter of the required gains

  • Using new types of fuel (low or zero carbon) for the remaining part

The Syroco EfficientShip software platform builds digital twins of ships by leveraging physics modelling, data and AI. Deployed on board, in the fleet/operations centre and in the design office, the digital twins bring the scientific and data-driven foundation to support the pillars of the 2050 trajectory by powering the optimisation engine of the smart ship and enabling the best design choices for wind propulsion technologies.
Alex Caizergues, CEO, Syroco

Bio: Alex Caizergues is a French kiteboarder, 4 times kitespeed world champion, first man to break the 100 km/h on water and holder of 6 speed records. He still holds the kite world record at 107.3 km/h set in the south of France in 2017.

In 2019, he co-founded Syroco, a Climate Tech startup that supports the energy transition of maritime transportation. It provides fleet operators, cargo owners, naval architects & shipyards a solution to reduce the fuel consumption and carbon footprint of ships.
